Edmonton-based Mosaic Entertainment just wrapped principal photography on a new feature film titled #Roxy. Shot in Edmonton and St. Albert, #Roxy, a teenage romantic-comedy, is a modern retelling of the 19th century verse play Cyrano de Bergerac. It is a younger version of the 1987 romantic comedy Roxanne starring Steve Martin, as a firefighter with a huge nose in love with a beautiful newcomer.
The three main roles are carried by Disney’s Lab Rat star Jake Short (A.N.T. Farm, Mighty Med) as Cyrus, Booboo Stewart (X-Men, Twightly Saga) as Christian, and Sarah Fisher (Degrassi) as Roxy. Rounding out the cast are Edmonton-born Patricia Zentilli and Scott Pocha along with 600 local kids serving as extras.
In Mosaic’s abridged version, Roxy is best friends with Cyrus, an intelligent, witty computer genius with an embarassingly large nose. But while Cyrus has a secret crush on Roxy, she just views him as a pal. Enter Christian Newville, a new good-looking football player who arrives at Bergerac High. Roxy finds herself attracted to him. When Roxy asks Cyrus to help her connect with Chris, Cyrus is crushed, but uses his smarts and computer skills to bring the two together.
Cyrus soon lives vicariously as Christian, swaying Roxy’s passion for classic literature and enchanting her with cyber age romance via text and social media. Christian gradually morphs into a virtual dream boy and everything would be perfect except that in real life he doesn’t exist.
Executive producer Jesse Lipscombe grew up in St. Albert along with Mosaic founder Camille Beaudoin. Lipscombe will play the role of Coach Harris, an easy-going football coach trying to earn his players’ respect. (Interesting to note the Lipscombe recently resigned from Mosiac Entertainment to throw his hat in the ring as first Executive Director for the newly formed Edmonton Media Commission.)
Directing the million dollar movie is Canadian born, Michael Kennedy, who also directed the first season of Little Mosque on the Prairie and was one of the directors on the Kids in the Hall series. The film is expected to be released next year both domestically (Superchannel has the Canadian rights) and nationally.
