The Rosie Awards celebrated its 45th awards ceremony to recognize the best in Alberta film and television Saturday night, April 27, at the Edmonton Convention Centre, and Edmonton productions and their creators won 29 of 57 categories. Mosaic Entertainment’s teen drama #Roxy took home Best Dramatic Feature Film, a big win for producers Camille Beaudoin and Eric Rebalkin. The feature also snagged an award for Best Editor.
The night was also a huge success for Edmonton director and writer Niobe Thompson, who took home five Rosies. Thompson snagged two awards for Equus: Story of the Horse for Best Documentary Series and Best Screenwriter (non-fiction over 30 minutes). Equus: Story of the Horse also took home three awards at the Canadian Screen Awards in Toronto in March.
Thompson also won Best Documentary (under 30 minutes) and Best Director (non-fiction under 30 minutes) for Boy Nomad, as well as Best Non-Fiction Short for Fast Horse.
Other local winners included Best Dramatic Short, awarded to The Suburbanight, produced by Eva Colmers and Susie Moloney; Best Musical, Comedy or Variety Program went to Frick, I Love Nature “Weird Ways Animals Make Babies” produced by Stephen Robinson; Best Music Video was awarded to producers Samantha Quantz and Daniel Carriere for Royal Tusk’s “Aftermath.”
As for some of the winners produced in Calgary, Wynonna Earp took Best Dramatic Series, while Abracadavers won Best Web Series (fiction). Best Director for a Drama over 30 Minutes was awarded to Heartland, best actor went to Greg Lawson from Wynonna Earp, and Amber Marshall of Heartland won best actress.

Edmonton-native Anne Wheeler also made an appearance at the ceremony to pay tribute to friend and producer Arvi Liimatainen, who died last year. In her speech Wheeler said Liimatainen “loved beauty, he loved films, he loved Alberta, and he loved this community.”
The event was hosted by Fred Keating, marking his 25th time hosting the Rosies. It was also a special one, as he was named the first recipient of the honorary AMPIA Ambassador Award.
